This painting was done as I sat beneath a grape vine looking up at it in a village I stayed at in Buenconvento, a Tuscan town in Italy. I was fortunate to join a group of painters who attended a morning workshop and then painted every afternoon for two weeks and traveled on weekends and evenings to neighboring Tuscan towns. It was a memorable experience and I enjoyed every minute of painting I did there and times I spent with my artist friends.

This is one of my larger abstract paintings using line and shapes fashioned after one of my favorite abstract painters, Kandinsky. He wrote an entire book on the use of dots, lines and color and I tried to use some of his theories in this painting. It has black painted sides with 1 1/2" thickness and can be hung without a frame.

I tried to use a push/pull motif; is the orange circle behind or in front of the green rectangle? You figure it out.

On Christmas Day, my husband, Don, two of my sons, Paul and Louis, and I hiked through the historic Valley Forge at dusk when the skies were so blue and the ground so orange. The complementary colors of that particular day inspired me to do this pastel of the colorful scene.
Our family is so fortunate to have this beautiful, vast, historic Valley Forge park so near and available to us for hiking and biking which we do often as a favily all year round.

We even walked up the steep hill from his studio to the park dedicated to him which overlooks Mt. Victoire the famous mountain he painted. In a collage workshop the assignment was to create a collage relating to "apples." I chose to represent the characters and apple tree in the myth about the Garden of Hesperides. It was fun to do, all the cutting and pasting and led me back to a feeling of childhood. The result was more of an abstract due to its simplification.

This painting is my impression of a sunrise seen in Tropic Harbor in Del Ray, Florida. Every January my husband and I visit our friend Pat who lives in a condo overlooking this wonderful harbor. As often as I can, I try to catch the sun rising over this waterway which casts a different picture each moment as it gradually appears through the cloud formations.

This painting was one of the top ten prize winners in the 2008 Spring Baltimore Watercolor Society Show judged by Skip Lawrence.

A few years ago I traveled with a group of friends to Middlesburg, Va. and stayed at the Poor House Bed and Breakfast. It was actually once an authentic poor house where people were sent who had debts they couldn't pay. Now it is converted to a warm, comfortable bed and breakfast. This is a view near this B & B as you hike down the road a bit.

Middlesburg is horse country and is so close to Washington D.C. that when the Kennedy's were in the White House they attended Catholic Church services here. Also, I was told that Mrs. Kennedy used to ride horses through the fields of Middlesburg. Robert Duvall once owned a bar and restaurant not far from this B & B. It is a great place to vacation, especially in the Fall with the colorful foliage.

This painting won an Honorable mention at the Perkiomen Art Show in 2005.

In June a few artist friends of mine and I drove up to Martha's Vinyard for a painting workshop. I had never been there and was so pleased with the island. You need to take a 45 minute ferry to get there. We painted in the old fishing town and I picked this sailboat to paint which was sitting in the nearby water.

There were some problems because first it was so hot and not much shade, and second, the boat kept turning around and moving in different directions, I found it difficult to draw on site. So I took photos and chose one view and went with it. I finished it at home and used a palette knife completely, which was also challenging. But I like the texture of paint you can get when you use a palette knife, even though it is not easy to put in details. I guess the painting comes out with softer edges looking more impressionistic focusing on the abstract shapes rather than total realism.
