A few years ago I traveled with a group of friends to Middlesburg, Va. and stayed at the Poor House Bed and Breakfast. It was actually once an authentic poor house where people were sent who had debts they couldn't pay. Now it is converted to a warm, comfortable bed and breakfast. This is a view near this B & B as you hike down the road a bit.

Middlesburg is horse country and is so close to Washington D.C. that when the Kennedy's were in the White House they attended Catholic Church services here. Also, I was told that Mrs. Kennedy used to ride horses through the fields of Middlesburg. Robert Duvall once owned a bar and restaurant not far from this B & B. It is a great place to vacation, especially in the Fall with the colorful foliage.

This painting won an Honorable mention at the Perkiomen Art Show in 2005.

Max loved Gladwyne Montessori School where he learned many things to prepare him for First Grade. Here he is pouring water from pitcher to pitcher, an exercise to develop co-ordination. He had a great smile on his face and he just loved performing for his grandparents on Grandparent Day when we could visit his classroom.

I enjoy painting children, especially my grandsons. I tried to us complements here--the green background contrasting with his red shirt. In June a few artist friends of mine and I drove up to Martha's Vinyard for a painting workshop. I had never been there and was so pleased with the island. You need to take a 45 minute ferry to get there. We painted in the old fishing town and I picked this sailboat to paint which was sitting in the nearby water.

There were some problems because first it was so hot and not much shade, and second, the boat kept turning around and moving in different directions, I found it difficult to draw on site. So I took photos and chose one view and went with it. I finished it at home and used a palette knife completely, which was also challenging. But I like the texture of paint you can get when you use a palette knife, even though it is not easy to put in details. I guess the painting comes out with softer edges looking more impressionistic focusing on the abstract shapes rather than total realism.

This tree impressed me so much that I just had to paint it. I experimented with a limited palette of cadmium red, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow and titanium white. I was surprised at all the colors I could make with these four oil tubes.

This abstract was inspired by an old mill in our area. The flowing water was what I tried to capture in this painting which won an honorable mention award in a local juried art show.

This painting was done using Schminke soft pastels which are a joy to use because they blend so well. I tried to capture the light on the apples and the apple reflections on the table. Yesterday I went apple picking with my grandsons and purchased some apples to use in future paintings.

Because I had these beautiful white hydrangeas still fresh from the first painting, I decided to do a miniature 5" x 5" from the same setup in the red pitcher with a yellow background. The shape of the flowers is a little different and because of the small size of the canvas, I placed the pitcher more off center. I also painted some blues and violets to offset the totally white flowers.

In the summer these white hydrangeas are so appealing to paint. Being white, they lend to adding colors to enhance them. I put them in this red pitcher I have and used a yellow background to give it a glow. I like when the flowers seem to explode off the canvas rather than always keeping them contained into a defined space within the painting.

I love hydrangeas and have several hydrangea plants in my garden. I decided to paint the light on a still life of purple hydrangeas from my garden. This variety has tiny petals and I find them difficult to paint individually so I am attempting to paint an impression of them. This is my first effort in oils. I plan to do a series of them until I perfect my painting style of hydrangeas.

This is another animal I painted in my animal series. It was done first with a grisaille underpainting and then glazed with oils. The most challenging part was trying to get the tiger's fur look realistic enough. Also, the expression on his face took some time to do. Although I struggled with this one, the effort was worth it and I learned a great deal from painting Tiger I.

For the longest while, I never painted animals except for our pet cat Tiger. But recently I have attempted a few animals from pictures I have taken at our local zoos. This is one from the Norristown zoo which I visited with my grandchildren. I must admit that the stripes were tedious, but I was happy when it was finally finished. What do you think?

Every summer we visit my best friend Pat's daughter's house in the Catskills. We sit out on the deck many hours of the day eating, reading, relaxing and watching this idyllic view. Because of the clouds, the changing weather and movement of the sun, the light and shadows change constantly, almost from minute to minute. I painted au plein aire, but because of the changing landscape, I needed to do many paintings at once to reflect the different light and shadows. This is one done in high afternoon light.

This is one of the most picturesque places I visited in France. It is a stop on a pilgramage people take from France to Spain. This little town also produces many types of cheese. Across from this scene is a little restaurant where you can eat lunch to enjoy the view. I have painted it several times.

In the Fall of 2003, I went on a workshop with sixteen other artists for two weeks in Buenconvento, Tuscany. I painted everyday and visited different towns in Tuscany in the afternoon and evening. This is one of the paintings I did from one of the towns.

This is the second larger painting of Mirror Lake that I actually began before the smaller one. The reflection in this version is darker than the first one. As I said before, doing a mirror reflection and having it look like it is in the lake was a challenge for me. I have other scenes of Yosemite that I plan to paint in the future.

This is a smaller one of two paintings I did of Mirror Lake when I visited Yosemite with my husband and friends. I was enthralled by the mirror reflection which appears much darker than the origjnal mountain. I struggled with the reflection and making it appear like it was really in the water. I hope to revisit Yosemite because of its beautiful vistas and scenic trails.

This is a painting of the pond outside of the Winterthur House which our family visited with our grandchildren. In one of my travels last year, we visited a little French fishing village where Matisse and other painters went to paint called Collioure. It is the most beautiful, quaint place on the southeast coast, just before you enter Spain. Everywhere you walk along the waterfront is so picturesque that you want to put up your easel and paint it.

Blue-green water, beautiful sandy beaches, sunny days and colorful sunsets....

What a wonderful island to visit this year in February with my husband, Don, son, Mike, daughter-in-law, Julie, and two grandsons, Jacob and Max. IGrace Bay Beach is in Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

This vacation was a special birthday treat, and I have decided to paint a series of Caribbean scenes from this vacation. The clouds over the ocean were magnificent and we relaxed watching them change as we sat at the pool. There were also very dramatic sunsets, especially when people on horses walked against these sunsets on the beach.
Eating at beachside restaurants and walking back to our hotel on the moonlit beaches added to the beaufy of this vacation. Since Turks and Caicos is only a three hour flight from Philadelphia, it was a very relaxing, laid back trip.
