Oyster Beds in Le Canon, France

Oyster Beds in Le Canon, France
30" x 40" oil on stretched canvas

Sitting on the veranda facing this beautiful vista and its changing sunrises and sunsets is what we do when we visit Le Canon at the Gilchrist home of Patrick and Florence, parents of our close friends Seamus and Mia.

This is a painting of oyster beds in the Bassein de Archechon in the northwestern shore of France near Cap Ferret, an hour north of Bordeaux. It is also where Monet and other impressionists painted because of its beauty.

The house looks out at this vast water basin full of oyster beds. The raw oysters in all the areas of these waters are so fresh and delicious. We eat them at the little restaurant houses owned by the French oyster fishermen and enjoy the beautiful waterfront view and the changing sunsets.

This painting is sold, but an 8" x 10" print is available for $75 plus s/h.

Garden of Hesperides

Garden of Hesperides
24" x 18" Collage
In a collage workshop the assignment was to create a collage relating to "apples." I chose to represent the characters and apple tree in the myth about the Garden of Hesperides. It was fun to do, all the cutting and pasting and led me back to a feeling of childhood. The result was more of an abstract due to its simplification.
This collage is not for sale at this time.

Country Road I

Country Road I
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas
A few years ago I traveled with a group of friends to Middlesburg, Va. and stayed at the Poor House Bed and Breakfast. It was actually once an authentic poor house where people were sent who had debts they couldn't pay. Now it is converted to a warm, comfortable bed and breakfast. This is a view near this B & B as you hike down the road a bit.
Middlesburg is horse country and is so close to Washington D.C. that when the Kennedy's were in the White House they attended Catholic Church services here. Also, I was told that Mrs. Kennedy used to ride horses through the fields of Middlesburg. Robert Duvall once owned a bar and restaurant not far from this B & B. It is a great place to vacation, especially in the Fall with the colorful foliage.
This painting won an Honorable mention at the Perkiomen Art Show in 2005.
This original painting is not for sale, but prints in various sizes will be available soon. You can email me for prices and sizes if you are interested. At a later date, I will add them to this post.

Boat at Martha's Vinyard

Boat at Martha's Vinyard
10" x 8" on stretched canvas
In June a few artist friends of mine and I drove up to Martha's Vinyard for a painting workshop. I had never been there and was so pleased with the island. You need to take a 45 minute ferry to get there. We painted in the old fishing town and I picked this sailboat to paint which was sitting in the nearby water.
There were some problems because first it was so hot and not much shade, and second, the boat kept turning around and moving in different directions, I found it difficult to draw on site. So I took photos and chose one view and went with it. I finished it at home and used a palette knife completely, which was also challenging. But I like the texture of paint you can get when you use a palette knife, even though it is not easy to put in details. I guess the painting comes out with softer edges looking more impressionistic focusing on the abstract shapes rather than total realism.
If you would like to purchase this painting, please email me.

White Hydrangeas II

White Hydrangeas II
5" x 5" oil on stretched canvas
Because I had these beautiful white hydrangeas still fresh from the first painting, I decided to do a miniature 5" x 5" from the same setup in the red pitcher with a yellow background. The shape of the flowers is a little different and because of the small size of the canvas, I placed the pitcher more off center. I also painted some blues and violets to offset the totally white flowers.

An 8" x 10" print is available for $75 plus s/h.

White Hydrangeas I

White Hydrangeas I
9" x 12" oil on stretched canvas

In the summer these white hydrangeas are so appealing to paint. Being white, they lend to adding colors to enhance them. I put them in this red pitcher I have and used a yellow background to give it a glow. I like when the flowers seem to explode off the canvas rather than always keeping them contained into a defined space within the painting.

If you would like to purchase this painting, please email me. This oil painting ready for framing is priced at $250 plus s/h. An 8" x 10" print is available for $75 plus s/h.

Purple Hydrangeas

Purple Hydrangeas
10" x 8" oil on stretched canvas
I love hydrangeas and have several hydrangea plants in my garden. I decided to paint the light on a still life of purple hydrangeas from my garden. This variety has tiny petals and I find them difficult to paint individually so I am attempting to paint an impression of them. This is my first effort in oils. I plan to do a series of them until I perfect my painting style of hydrangeas.

Tiger I

Tiger I
17 1/2 x 26 oil on panel framed
This is another animal I painted in my animal series. It was done first with a grisaille underpainting and then glazed with oils. The most challenging part was trying to get the tiger's fur look realistic enough. Also, the expression on his face took some time to do. Although I struggled with this one, the effort was worth it and I learned a great deal from painting Tiger I.
If you would like to purchse this oil painting, please email me. It is in a wood frame which I can mail you a picture of it framed if you wish.

For the longest while, I never painted animals except for our pet cat Tiger. But recently I have attempted a few animals from pictures I have taken at our local zoos. Catskills Barn and Silo

Catskills Barn and Silo
8" x 10" oil painting on stretched canvas
Every summer we visit my best friend Pat's daughter's house in the Catskills. We sit out on the deck many hours of the day eating, reading, relaxing and watching this idyllic view. Because of the clouds, the changing weather and movement of the sun, the light and shadows change constantly, almost from minute to minute. I painted au plein aire, but because of the changing landscape, I needed to do many paintings at once to reflect the different light and shadows. This is one done in high afternoon light.

Blue Night

Blue Night
30" x 40" acrylic on stretched canvas
This is an abstract in a series on color and design that I am working on in addition to my more representational paintings. I hope the feeling of night forms and dream states is conveyed by the color and shapes. You might think abstract paintings are easy, but for me they are more difficult because they are based on one's imagination.
