Oyster Beds in Le Canon, France

Oyster Beds in Le Canon, France
30" x 40" oil on stretched canvas

Sitting on the veranda facing this beautiful vista and its changing sunrises and sunsets is what we do when we visit Le Canon at the Gilchrist home of Patrick and Florence, parents of our close friends Seamus and Mia.

This is a painting of oyster beds in the Bassein de Archechon in the northwestern shore of France near Cap Ferret, an hour north of Bordeaux. It is also where Monet and other impressionists painted because of its beauty.

The house looks out at this vast water basin full of oyster beds. The raw oysters in all the areas of these waters are so fresh and delicious. We eat them at the little restaurant houses owned by the French oyster fishermen and enjoy the beautiful waterfront view and the changing sunsets.

This painting is sold, but an 8" x 10" print is available for $75 plus s/h.

Red Sweet Bell Pepper I

Red Sweet Bell Pepper I

5" x 7" oil on canvas panel

This delicious and nutricious pepper originated in South America with seeds dating from 5000B. C. Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought them to other continents. These plump peppers provide vitamins A, B and C and can be used in many recipes. Paprika and pimento are prepared from red peppers. They are very sweet and can be eaten raw for a treat.

Their beautiful red coloring make them a great choice for painting.

Red Apple I

Red Apple I 5" x 7" Oil on Canvas Panel

The apple is associated with love, beauty, health, luck, pleasure, wisdom, temptation, sensuality, sexuality, fertility and virility. Tradition connects the origin of man and women with an apple tree in the Garden of Paradise.

In Greek mythology, Gaia, or Mother Earth, gave Zeus and his wife Hera a tree with golden apples on their wedding day which was in the garden of Hesperides. This tree was guarded by Ladon, a serpent who never slept and the golden apples became the subject of many tales of love, temptation and bribery in Greek mythology.

Remains of apples as a food were found in the excavations of Jericho in the Jordan Valley dating back to 6000 B.C. So you can see that apples were enjoyed as food from prehistoric times. The apple also has a scientific history dating back to Sir Isaac Newman who let it fall to the ground to form his laws of gravity. In American folklore, Johnny Appleseed promoted the propigation of apple trees. Today apples are enjoyed in all types of recipes by many cultures.

You might think that painting an apple is an easy thing, but it isn't. The first time I ever painted an apple, I spent hours on it until I could get it the way I wanted. But apples are fun to paint and that is why I, and many other painters, enjoy painting them.

Himalayan Blue Poppy

Himalayan Blue Poppy 10"x 8" oil painting on stretched canvas

This poppy attracted me because of its vibrant purple blue color. It is native to South Africa and South America. I enjoy painting individual flowers that take up an entire canvas in the style of Georgia O'Keefe.

If you ever have the chance to visit the Georgia O'Keefe museum in Santa Fe, you will be totally satisfied. She painted in Santa Fe and in Taos, and her former studio is now an art center providing painting workshops.

The very first time I saw an exhibit by Georgia O'Keefe was in the 60's in New York with my friend Pat Winterer. We braved a snow blizzard to get there, but we were not going to miss it for the world. As you can see, Georgia O'Keefe is one of my favorite painters.

Red Oriental Poppy

Red Oriental Poppy 8"x10" oil on stretched canvas.

This Southwest Asian plant is widely cultivated for its brilliant scarlet and black colors. There is nothing as pleasing as looking at a field or flower bed of red poppies. Some poppies are valued by herbalists for their medicinal value as a curative for sleeplessness. The common garden poppy, however, is in no manner opiating. The red poppy is a symbol of the American Legion. In the
U.S. it is used as a symbol of soldiers injured or killed in war and is an artificial red poppy is often worn at Memorial Day ceremonies. I am working on an 18"x24" canvas of a bouquet of red poppies because I enjoy painting them so much.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis 7"x5" oil on masonite

Today I was inspired to paint this amaryllis that once bloomed on my windowsill. Since I love flowers, I will also do a series of small flower paintings before I return to landscapes which often take a few days to finish.

The technique I used in this paintings was one to display texture. This surface, masonite allows the paint to sit on top rather than soak into the surface as it does on canvas. Therefore, it is easier to gain texture on such a hard surface.

Amaryllis traditially has symbolized pride, splendid beauty and poetry. It is a warm climate plant, and is found natively in South Africa and South America.

Classical Poetry Myth about Amaryllis:

Amaryllis was a virginal nymph who fell in love with Alteo, a strong and handsome shepherd. However, he was indifferent to her and only desired that a new flower be brought to him that had never existed in the world before. Amaryllis consulted the Oracle at Delphi and was instructed to pierce her heart with a golden arrow at Alteo's door. So, dressed in maiden's white, Amaryllis did this for 30 consecutive nights, dripping blood all the while. When the shepherd finally opened his door, he discovered a flower with crimson petals which had sprung from the blood of Amaryllis's heart.
