Sitting on the veranda facing this beautiful vista and its changing sunrises and sunsets is what we do when we visit Le Canon at the Gilchrist home of Patrick and Florence, parents of our close friends Seamus and Mia.

This is a painting of oyster beds in the Bassein de Archechon in the northwestern shore of France near Cap Ferret, an hour north of Bordeaux. It is also where Monet and other impressionists painted because of its beauty.

The house looks out at this vast water basin full of oyster beds. The raw oysters in all the areas of these waters are so fresh and delicious. We eat them at the little restaurant houses owned by the French oyster fishermen and enjoy the beautiful waterfront view and the changing sunsets.

This painting is sold, but an 8" x 10" print is available for $75 plus s/h.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis 7"x5" oil on masonite

Today I was inspired to paint this amaryllis that once bloomed on my windowsill. Since I love flowers, I will also do a series of small flower paintings before I return to landscapes which often take a few days to finish.

The technique I used in this paintings was one to display texture. This surface, masonite allows the paint to sit on top rather than soak into the surface as it does on canvas. Therefore, it is easier to gain texture on such a hard surface.

Amaryllis traditially has symbolized pride, splendid beauty and poetry. It is a warm climate plant, and is found natively in South Africa and South America.

Classical Poetry Myth about Amaryllis:

Amaryllis was a virginal nymph who fell in love with Alteo, a strong and handsome shepherd. However, he was indifferent to her and only desired that a new flower be brought to him that had never existed in the world before. Amaryllis consulted the Oracle at Delphi and was instructed to pierce her heart with a golden arrow at Alteo's door. So, dressed in maiden's white, Amaryllis did this for 30 consecutive nights, dripping blood all the while. When the shepherd finally opened his door, he discovered a flower with crimson petals which had sprung from the blood of Amaryllis's heart.
